The Honorable XYZ RE: Cosponsor S. 2617 Dear Senator XYZ: I own (insert business or business worked for or position in aftermarket). I want to make you aware of my support for a bill that will bring motoring consumers from all walks of life the freedom to choose where, how and by whom to have their vehicles repaired, maintained, and to purchase the replacement parts of their choice. This legislation is S. 2617, a freemarket bill. Vehicles that are 1996 and newer (and some earlier models) are equipped with computers that control vital systems such as: air bags, brakes, steering mechanisms, ignition, ignition key, climate control and sound systems. In order to have these systems repaired, maintained and parts replaced, motorists must return to the car dealerships. This has created a monopoly on repairs, parts and prices. Without free?market competition, motorists are forced to pay high prices on repairs and parts. In addition to the economic hardships this will place on the independent repair shops and stores, it will also create a safety hazard. Motorists who do not have convenient car dealerships in their towns, low and fixed income motorists and those who live in very rural areas, will be forced to drive possibly unsafe vehicles while trying to drive to a dealership or while trying to save enough money to pay the car dealership prices. This jeopardizes their safety and that of others. S. 2617 does NOT restrict motorists from choosing to go to car dealerships, it does NOT drive motorists into the independent repair shops and it does NOT seek proprietary information. It simply allows motorists to choose where, how and by whom to have their vehicles repaired and to purchase their parts of choice. It allows motorists to work on their own vehicles. As a resident of (INSERT STATE), voter, aftermarket (employer or employee), I respectfully request that you cosponsor S. 2617 as soon as possible and vote for this legislation. I look forward to your reply as to how you will vote and if you will cosponsor. Thank you. Sincerely, |
